PERFORMER "Giordano" INDEX 01 43:08:54 Madame Sans-Gêne is Umberto Giordano’s opera about a laundress who becomes a duchess whose manners are not much appreciated at the court of Napoleon I. Once wildly popular, it quickly died during the 1920s, largely because it had been a starring role of soprano Geraldine Farrar who retired from the stage in 1922. I still remember the photo of Farrar as Sans-Gêne in the Victor Book of the Opera, standing at an ironing board and grinning into the camera with a psychotic stare like a deer caught in the headlights. Listening to this lively, well conducted, and mostly well-sung performance, the jury is still out. As an auditory experience, Madame Sans-Gêne is not a masterpiece like his Andrea Chenier or another opera it resembles, Cilea’s Adriana Lecouvreur , but it’s by no means bad. It’s just sort of there. Overall, Giordano was a better composer than Ciléa, but Ciléa hit his stride with Adriana while for Giordano, Madame Sans-Gêne seems a well-crafted piece that just failed to gel. But of course, here we can only listen to it. We can’t see it, and therein sometimes lies the difference. Without the visual element, it’s hard to say if it would work on a stage or not. As in Andrea Chenier, we see the characters both pre- and post-Revolution, but since this is a comedy, no one is guillotined and everyone survives Robespierre’s bloodbath. Indeed, they not only survive but thrive; Lefebvre becomes a marshal in Napoleon’s army and Fouché later becomes the emperor’s minister. When Caterina marries Lefebvre and becomes a duchess, her low manners so offend the court that Napoleon himself summons her to try to teach her how to act. But, it turns out, Madame Sans-Gêne remembers him too, as a poor young soldier she fed and clothed who didn’t pay her back. Touched by her memories of him as a young starveling, Napoleon pardons her peasant temperament, listens to her when she describes Count Neipperg not as an adulterer but as a faithful spy, and everyone lives happily ever after. Napoleon’s banishment to Corsica is far in the future as the opera ends with the emperor as a jolly old elf. Magda László had a fine light lyric soprano voice, bright and silvery. Tenor Danilo Vega also had a good voice, a little undistinguished perhaps, but certainly not bad. Baritone Carlo Tagliabue, as Napoleon, does well for an older singer whose voice had deteriorated somewhat from his glory days of the 1930s and 1940s. (The sonics are so good that you can hear him clearing his throat!) The remaining singers are competent if not particularly memorable; one can say the same for the music. Arturo Basile conducts a taut, well bound, very musical performance. The RAI Milan orchestra plays surprisingly well for the time and place. High marks must be given to GOP for the transfer; considering that this is broadcast sound, the miking is quite good. I wonder if this was a concert performance for radio only; it sounds it to me. The end of the second act and most of act III sound much more serious and less comical in tone. The music is archetypal verismo : pleasantly tuneful (but not treacly), harmonically tonal, and conventional. One of the most impressive passages in the whole score is the orchestral prelude to the third act, which builds from soft cello and woodwind murmurs to dramatic climaxes. I’ll put it to you this way, it’s a much better opera, overall, than Ciléa’s L’arlesiana or Leoncavallo’s Zaza, both of which are (for reasons unknown to me) revived nowadays. There is only one other recording of this opera available, another live performance (from 1967, in stereo) featuring soprano Orianna Santunione, tenor Franco Tagliavini, and baritone Renato Capecchi, conducted by Gianandrea Gavazzeni (Opera d’Oro 1415), but neither conductor Gavazzeni nor soprano Santunione is as fine as Basile or László.
