The zarzuela grande Marina is set on the shores of the sea, by the temperamental Mediterranean, and concerns the life and loves of fishermen, sailors, and people making their living off the sea.
It was composed by Emilio Arrieta and set a text by the author Francisco Camprodón.
Everywhere the score reflects the composer's love of the sea and his affinity with its emotional nuances and pulsating rhythms.
Marina became one of the most popular and frequently performed of all of the nineteenth century musical dramas of Spain.
In this work, Arrieta greatly expanded the dramatic forms of the traditional Spanish zarzuela, creating a Spanish comic opera with a poetic vision.
Elements such as orchestral timbres, instrumental combinations, and his sense of theater work together for the sake of the dramatic whole.
Trained in Italy, Arrieta's roots are deep in the traditions of Italian opera, as manifested in the works of the composers Bellini, Donizetti, and Verdi.
This helped influence his attitude toward text setting, which seeks to combine textual and musical elements for greater expressivity.
Native genres and forms such as the seguidillas and habaneras help create a truly Spanish musical language in Arrieta's style, without becoming nationalistic.
Marina premiered at the Teatro del Circo on September 21, 1855.
It had an extremely lukewarm reception by both critics and audience, despite its sensuous, lively, spontaneous melodies, rich orchestrations, and sumptuous harmonies.
Although a relative failure in Madrid, it was popular in other parts of Spain, and continued to be performed during subsequent years.
