Medea, a mother who kills her own children, is one of world literature's most controversial figures. She has abandoned her own family, sacrificed everything for her husband Jason and arrived as a refugee in a new country. Once there, she left by Jason bitter may regret their unfaithfulness. In Daniel Börtz newly written opera is Euripides' ancient drama - modernized by Agneta Pleijel and Jan Post - an intense psychological experience where Medea's furious, bloody revenge is central.
Daniel Börtz is one of Sweden's most acclaimed and prolific composer and has written several operas before, including The Bacchae , which was built under the direction of Ingmar Bergman 1991.Medea was commissioned by the Royal Opera and directed by Stefan Larsson, theater manager at the Betty Nansen Teatret of Copenhagen . Medea is his debut as an opera director.
AKT 1
Medea with Jason fled from Colchis and find themselves as refugees in Corinth. Now Jason has broken up the marriage and left Medea and the children to marry King Creon's daughter. Medea is devastated. King Creon comes and announces that she and the children must immediately leave the country. He is afraid that Medea could harm his daughter.
Medea appeal and persuade Kreon be allowed to stay a single day to arrange a home for the children. Amman and the women of Corinth tries to console Medea is desperate. Jason comes and tries to gloss over what has happened, and says that the marriage will also benefit Medea and the children. Medea becomes furious and show him out.
Aegeus, Pandions son from Athens, has been with the oracle of Delphi to investigate how he can have children. Medea tells him that Jason left her and that she and the children banished from Corinth. She promises to help Aegeus against him to give her asylum in Athens. Aegeus accept and swear an oath to keep his promise to her.
Medea is now obsessed with revenge. Before she leaves the country, she should let their children send a wedding gift to the king's daughter, a veil and gold wreath coated with deadly poison. Then she'll kill the children. A worse revenge for Jason's infidelity is not. Amman and the other women dread her words.
AKT 2
Medea has asked Jason to come. She has now changed, she says, and accept that Jason will marry another. She wants him and his new wife to take care of the children. She suggests that the two sons shall send a gift to the bride. The gift will do the king's daughter sympathetic and Creon to let the children stay. Jason is surprised but relieved and agree to the proposal.
The sons returning from the palace and their carers tells us that the gifts surrendered and been well received. Medea will not listen. The act that she now has to perform the hardest and she hesitates.
A messenger arrives from the palace. He describes how Creon and his daughter died a painful death of Medea's poison, is now the guards on the way. He calls Medea to immediately leave the country. Medea listen quietly and let the messenger go. "What I will do is decided. Dead children, then escape. Delay I left the kids out to be murdered by a hand more cruel than mine: I do not want! "She goes out to the children, and shortly thereafter heard terrible screams from inside the house.
Unaware that the children are already dead will Jason to save them from King Creon's men. Amman tells us what happened. Jason could not at first comprehend what Amman says, but then falls into despair. Medea comes out of the house and Jason asks her to see and touch the children one last time. She replies that he will never touch her or their children again.
